Google TV profiles are now being actively rolled out

We never thought the day would come, but it’s finally here. Google TV profiles is currently being rolled out.

You can finally use Google TV profiles

The core idea behind Google TV is to personalize content, which is why it was quite annoying that the platform only supported one user profile on the home screen. Google had teased profiles before, and even launched a version especially for children last year, but good user profiles felt like they might never arrive.

End of last yearGoogle announced that Profiles will be available soon, but the feature was delayed some time later for unknown reasons. It was not until six months later that Google finally announced that the rollout was coming soon.

Now we are pleased to report that it appears that profiles are rolling out widely to Google TV. Profiles automatically convert all existing Google accounts on the device into a profile, and you can create new user profiles relatively easily from the Settings menu – just add a Google account and you’re good to go.

Interestingly, however, we nothing but see this has arrived on Chromecast with Google TV so far. Technically, the feature should also appear on Google TVs from Sony’s Bravia Serieslike The different options of TCLbut we don’t see any evidence of that yet.

If you’re using a Chromecast with Google TV and want to have user profiles, it’s best to manually force the feature to go live by checking for updates in the Play Store. The Google TV homepage launcher is probably a good place to start, but the change seems to be server-side.

Profiles are finally coming to Google TV, just after another major feature rolled out. Last week, we reported that Google TV’s redesigned “Proactive” screensaver was rolling out. That updated design offers recommendations for certain types of content, as well as information like the weather forecast, all from your idle TV screen.

It is worth noting that, with the arrival of the appropriate profiles, this page has been redesigned a little bit. Gone is the ‘other accounts’ section at the bottom of the screen, with everything now under ‘Google TV accounts’.

After you set up a new account on Google TV, you can switch between users by clicking your profile picture on the home screen and clicking ‘switch account’.
