While initially Solar 3.0 in Destiny 2 has had a slew of critics, more and more players are opening their brains to the possibility that it could actually be… pretty good, in many ways.
I’ve seen common complaints about Destiny 2’s Solar Titans being “destroyed” by the changes, including nerfs for Roaring Flames and sunspots. But in most content, with a relatively simple build, it can be really hard to die like a Titan. I’m not joking. Yesterday I deliberately tried to activate a wipe in the Duality dungeon, and saw there waiting for the mobs to kill me and they couldn’t. Too much damage control and healing, all the time, even though I didn’t do anything. I had to jump off the edge.
So what’s going on here? What is this construction? Simple, and I’m not even going to use seasonal mods:
Loreley beauty – I mean, huh. This is the no-brainer Solar Titan exotic this season, even after it was nerfed a while ago. It immediately produces a sunspot with recovery if you get low health and have your barricade up. And after that you can get a sunspot on demand if you build your own barricade (in PvE always use the one you can actually shoot over).
Sol Invictus aspect – This generates sunspots on grenade kills, sun melee kills or scorched target kills for more sunspots, more often, in more places.
Ember of Solace Fragment – This gives the restoration a longer duration, which you want each sunspot to activate it.
Ember of vocal fragment – This will make your class power recharge faster when you sear targets. Your sunspot scorches targets, charging your sunspot-generating barricade faster. I often run into groups of enemies and knock down a barricade that will fry them and charge them up almost instantly.
100 resilience – 40% damage reduction. insanity. A must-have for all classes now, but on Titan it will also help charge your barricade even faster.
Any glowing weapon – Since killing scorched enemies generates more sunspots, you want a weapon that will permanently scorch enemies. Calus Mini-Tool and Drang are the current top picks, but it could roll on a lot of solar stuff.
It really is. You can go crazy with weapons that also heal you with like Unrelenting or something like Crimson or SUROS, but I don’t see the point. With this build you can see how sunspots really are had to take a nerf before because even now they are still absurdly strong. Maybe more for defense than offense now, but man, what a defense it is.
No, you probably can’t tank endlessly in Master and GM content, but this is easily the strongest defensive Titan build I’ve ever seen in this game. Give it a shot, you won’t regret it.
