iPhone 14 vs Google Pixel 7: Key Differences to Expect

The iPhone 14 and the Pixel 7 will inevitably become one of the most popular devices by the end of 2022.

The iPhone 14 will have to take over from the iPhone 13 and arguably the most important workhorse of Apple’s lineup. With an improved camera, but not many other improvements over the iPhone 13, it will probably still be a hit, but will it perform as well as Apple hopes? And more importantly, how would it compare to the Google Pixel 7, which is generally expected to feature as few improvements as the iPhone 14. Google has more or less rebooted the Pixel lineup after the somewhat disappointing Pixel 5 mid-ranger, and the Pixel 6 was certainly a step in the right direction. It looks like Google agrees, as it’s reportedly only planning a handful of changes with the Pixel 7.

Design and display quality

Let the premium phones fight it out

From what we might suspect, there wouldn’t be any major changes to the iPhone 14 or the general design language of the Pixel 7, at least not in relation to their predecessors. Sure, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max get a new frontal design with a redesigned notch, but the regular iPhone 14 is expected to keep the latest narrower notch introduced with the iPhone 13 family. The device will be available in the following colors: Midnight, Starlight, Sky Blue, Red and Purple.

At the same time, the Pixel 7 probably won’t score any major changes over the Pixel 6. We expect the same flat screen on the front with the glossy back on the back to make the cut, and the camera strip gets one less camera than the Pixel 7 Pro. , but retaining its overall shape and form. Still, it’ll be slightly shorter and narrower than the Pixel 6: the Pixel 7’s leaked dimensions of 155.6 x 73.1 x 8.7mm reflect this image versus the 158.6 x 74.8 x 8 .9mm from its predecessor.

Google uses a single color for the glass back and a polished metal body in a complementary color for the camera bar. This means, for example, that the white Pixel 7 Pro will have a silver camera bar, but the gold Pixel 7 will have a champagne camera bar. These are minor elements, but it looks like Google got them right, as the latest Pixels do look extraordinarily beautiful.

When it comes to the screen, the iPhone 14 retains the 6.1-inch OLED screen used on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12. The iPhone 14 is unlikely to score a high refresh rate screen (it will only adorn the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max).

At the same time, the Pixel 7 will most likely get a 6.2-inch screen versus the 6.4-inch screen that graced the Pixel 6. It was an FHD+ OLED panel with a 90Hz refresh rate, so there’s a very good chance the Pixel 7 will have the same features, although we’re certainly hoping for a higher refresh rate.

Performance and software

Will the Pixel 7 Pro be able to beat the iPhone 13 Pro Max in power?

Google has now announced that the Pixel 7 pair will be equipped with a second-generation Tensor chip. Earlier sources revealed that the new CPU is codenamed ‘GS201’. This unknown chip is an advancement of Google’s own Tensor, the company’s first home-built mobile processor, which was used in the Pixel 6. The first Tensor chip bet on exceptional ML performance, but lagged the competition in single and multi-core CPU performance, so we hope the new GS201 will fill that void.

What about the iPhone 14? For the first time, we don’t get the new chip from Apple. Instead, the iPhone 14 uses the same chipset as the iPhone 13, which would be the Apple A15 Bionic. It’s certainly not a slow chip, but it sets an important precedent for Apple as all previous new iPhones have used the latest Apple chip. Unfortunately, the Apple A16 Bionic is only slated to appear on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

In terms of RAM, we don’t have any official information, but we assume the Pixel 7 will keep its 8GB LPDDR5 RAM. In terms of storage, the starting storage should clock in at 128 GB. Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 will most likely come with 4 GB of RAM and will also start with 128 GB.

Camera

Compact size, but great potential

According to many sources, including Google’s own Rick Osterloh, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will retain a 50MP primary camera sensor with a 1/1.3-inch sensor, which is comparable to or larger than most other premium phones. And, in principle, the bigger the sensor, the higher the performance. Both phones are believed to have the same 12MP ultra-wide camera. The Pixel 7 only has these two cameras, but the Pro edition has a third periscope-style telephoto camera with 4x zoom, similar to the previous model.

At the moment, the Pixel 7 is expected to have the following camera settings:

Meanwhile, Apple is expected to bring a new 48MP camera to the iPhone 14. Our expectations? Google has always stood by Apple when it comes to exceptional camera quality, and we expect the Pixel 7 to stay true to that mantra and generally match the iPhone 13 Pro Max in terms of camera quality. But if you’ve come to love that distinct “iPhone photo” look, the iPhone 14 will be the perfect photographic companion for years to come.

Battery life and charging

It will be hard to beat the iPhone

While we don’t have the exact battery size for the iPhone 14 or the Pixel 7, from what we’ve already said, you might be somewhat misled that we’re not really expecting any major changes on either phone. And if the design didn’t change much, the battery size wouldn’t be that much different, would it?

As a refresher, the iPhone 13 came with a 3227mAh battery and the Pixel 6 had a 4614mAh battery. Presumably, the iPhone 14 will boast a similar device, while the Pixel 7 may have a slightly smaller battery on board. In terms of endurance, the iPhone is likely to hold the upper hand due to the efficiency of the A15 Bionic, although we’re hopeful that the Tensor 2 would surprise us in terms of overall battery life.

Summary and final verdict

The upcoming affordable flagships, the Pixel 7 and the iPhone 14, are sure to clash as they sit in similar classes, and also share some common ground in terms of overall size and pricing. After failing to beat Android’s best in raw hardware against previous Pixels, Google has finally realized it needs to take the overall Android experience to a level never before achieved, and the way to do it. doing would be the Tensor-enhanced machine learning capabilities of the upcoming Pixel 7.

At the same time, the iPhone 14 is going to be a pretty iterative refresh of the iPhone 13, with nothing fancy in tow.
